At South Downs Education Trust we pride ourselves on delivering a dynamic and inclusive curriculum that truly reflects our trust values - Community, Integrity, Respect, Resilience and Excellence. From Worthing High School’s personalised curriculum, which blends core subjects with enrichment opportunities beyond the classroom, to Clapham and Patching’s creative, nature-inspired learning, rooted in the local community, our approach is designed to nurture every learner and celebrate every child’s potential.
The school has a two week timetable of 50 one-hour lessons. Students follow a common foundation course in their first three years and then move to individual timetables in Years 10 and 11. Key Stages 3 and 4 have a variety of mixed ability teaching and setting. The School also has a Specialist Support Centre (SSC) with designation for social communication. The SSC has capacity for 18 students.
The curriculum at Worthing High School is structured to give the students a broad and enjoyable experience of education, with an emphasis on personalisation for all students. The aim of the curriculum is to be inclusive and maximise the attainment of students.
At Key Stage 4, students will continue to study a balanced curriculum but can also make choices from subjects to suit their interest and career pathways. The core provision is English, Mathematics and Science. Students will also extend their learning opportunities within the PSHE Careers Education Programme.
The school offers to students, as options, the opportunity to study Humanities subjects, Technology, Business Studies, Expressive Arts and Modern Foreign Languages. The school’s curriculum is developing constantly to meet the needs of the students.
The school aims to enrich the learning of students outside the classroom. Our students benefit from enrichment days throughout the year with support from outside agencies. The aim of these days is to give students experiences and opportunities they may not initiate themselves. The school also provides a broad trip offer.
The school operates a horizontal tutoring structure, through which all students receive support, guidance and mentorship where available. The tutor programme will also provide a blend of literacy and numeracy provision, aimed to expose students to Maths in the real world, develop a love of reading, and enhance literacy skills.
High prior attaining students are stretched and challenged across the curriculum, but will also have access to additional enrichment opportunities, including ‘beyond curriculum’ which introduces subjects and disciplines beyond the National Curriculum.
Set in the South Downs National Park and with the capacity for just 56 children, Clapham and Patching is a small school with big aspirations. We strive to ensure that every child has a creative and exciting experience as they grow and develop with us.
As a Church of England school it is important that we provide an education that reflects our core values of 'Community, Integrity, Respect, Resilience and Excellence'. We see our school reflected in the parable of the mustard seed Matthew 13:32
"Though it is the smallest of all seeds, when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
We welcome children of all faiths and none into our unique setting, and at Clapham and Patching no child is invisible.
Our small school is an integral part of the local community and are regularly out and about walking a 'Wild Mile' in the local countryside. We run Forest School in our own area of Clapham Woods and have won national awards for 'Learning Outside the Classroom'.
As part of the South Downs Education Trust, we work closely with our friends at Worthing High School. This means that the children at Clapham and Patching have access to specialist teachers and frequently visit Worthing High School to share their excellent facilities.
