    Strategy

    Our five-year growth strategy

At South Downs Education Trust, our five-year growth strategy is designed with vision and purpose at its core. We are committed to deepening schools’ roles at the heart of their communities, elevating academic excellence and broadening enrichment opportunities for every learner. By prioritising professional development, creative collaboration and targeted support to address capacity gaps, we’re laying the foundation for sustainable and impactful expansion - not just in West Sussex, but beyond. Whether through incorporating new primary, secondary, special or alternative provision schools, our phased approach ensures careful and strategic growth, grounded in our values and shaped by our proven successes.

    Our vision for growth

We support our schools to achieve the following to ensure they reach their full potential and continue to strive for growth and excellence:

    • Expansion of the role our schools play at the heart of their communities
    • Growing aspirations and outcomes for all our students
    • Increasing the offer of academic, extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities available to all
    • Strong and effective CPD for all staff
    • Opportunities for staff to work creatively and collaboratively
    • Excellent recruitment and retention strategies
    • Direct targeting of gaps in capacity in each school to achieve maximum impact

    Considerations for growth

We are a cross phrase multi-academy trust and are excited at the potential to expand and support more schools in the local area and further afield.

    • We are passionate about expanding our Primary and Secondary offer throughout West Sussex and beyond
    • We are focused on incorporating Primary, Alternative Provision and Special Schools
    • We are able to work with Diocesan schools who are Voluntarily Controlled due to the addition of Clapham & Patching CofE Primary school into our multi-academy trust

    Phase one 2021-24

We support our schools with a cross-trust support system which is logistically manageable and we ensure our trust staff can be effectively utilised.

    Phase one will comprise of:

    • Initial incorporation of 1-2 secondary schools, within a one-hour drive of our founding school Worthing High School
    • Begin to create a cluster of primary schools by incorporating 1-2 Good and Outstanding local primaries whose values are aligned with our own
    • Aim to prioritise schools in close proximity to existing schools with intention to create an “all through” experience for pupils, helping to support excellent primary provision in the area

    Phase two 2024 – 27

We are focused on long term growth. With a solid foundation in place we will continue to expand while also being innovative, creative and cost effective.

    Phase two will commence when:

    • South Downs Education Trust has doubled in size.

    • The Executive Team has significant experience in managing multiple school sites

    • Additional resources and expertise are in place within the trust’s central team and in the trust school’s leadership teams

    • When there is greater capacity to take on more school improvement opportunities

    • We will explore opportunities to grow secondary and primary provision through:

      • Support of underperforming schools
      • Incorporation of improving schools
      • Opening of a special free school
